This is a thread dedicated to the discussion and posting related to Koji Kumeta’s Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei.
What is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei?
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Translated as “Goodbye Mr. Despair”, with Mister being used as the salutation of a teacher) is a black comedy gag manga by Koji Kumeta and currently serialized by Weekly Shonen Magazine. It follows the life of Nozomu Itoshiki, the titural Mr. Despair, an extremely negative and paranoid high school teacher as he deals with a classroom full of psychotic, dangerous, insane or just simply weird students each representing either a social problem in Japan (such as a Hikikomori) or simply a character stereotype that is either based in real life or in common anime archetypes. There’s hardly any plot to speak of and every chapter is pretty much an enclosed plot and continuity is generally done away with for the sake of humor. The manga has a well-received anime adaptation by studio SHAFT that at the moment of this post has three TV seasons and 2 DVD OVAs available.
Why should I watch or read this stupid thing?!
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is not just black comedy in the style you’d see in shows such as South Park. It can be considered, in fact, a sort of surrealist social/political satire that despite clearly mocking or parodying japanese society never becomes overbearing about it. What this means is that you shouldn’t go into the show or manga expecting it to be a full-blown political manifesto wherein the characters are just a way to show the author’s political views (such as in American animated sitcoms like Family Guy). However, if you like manga/anime and post in LF you would probably like the occasional joke about Stalin or other such political things.
Should I watch the anime or read the manga?
It depends mostly on how much time you have. Anime episodes last around 24 minutes and consist of 2 or 3 manga chapters, whereas you can probably read a chapter of the manga is 2 or so minutes. However, the anime adaptation is very good and many times its even funnier than the manga particularily because of director Akiyuki Shinbo’s surreal artistic genius.
I’m reading the manga and its just a bunch of hastily drawn schoolgirls!!
It’s called minimalism deal with it.
If you’re reading a manga with schoolgirl characters its obviously because you want to fuck them + are a pedophile.
That’s a very interesting opinion, feel free to voice it here.
So why did you make this dumb fucking thread anyway?
LF talks almost entirely about grim depressing things and you guys are so god damn negative that you might actually identify with the main character. Besides, having a thread about something that is funny is a bit of a change about the typical “Guess what horrible thing america did now!” threads we usually have which while I appreciate seem kind of monotone when we only post about that.
I still don’t get it.
